Still Life Paintings

Still Life Paintings

Page 1

From a very young age, the patterned designs of lace have always intrigued me. Many of my early attempts at drawing and painting often included a piece of Grandma's lace.

In these paintings, lace patterns are used to contrast and compliment the forms in the still life. Positive/negative shapes play an important role in the patterned composition of both the lace and the overall complete composition. As always, experimenting with color is my greatest thrill.

AWARD

When The Montserrat College of Art had its 25th anniversary, they chose 25 artists from among their alumni to exhibit a piece in their 25 Year Show. I was honored when Seven Doors was chosen to be part of this special commemorative event.

Seven Doors is an endeavor to capture the eye and keep it comfortably wandering aaround in search for more, as one does in a curio shop. I chose beloved patterned inanimate objects with careful attention given to their shape, size, color, form and ability to co-ordinate with each other. While creating separate groupings of objects, focus was always on positive/negative shapes. As the composition began to grow, careful placement of the small still life arrangements in relationship to each other created an even larger positive/negative patterned statement.

The interior background with the seven doors and all that exists within their framework, was also arranged in the same manner with the same considerations given to the placement of forms. By plastically moving the colors and shapes around the page in all directions, I was able to create a deeper space in which to invite the viewer to roam..

From the article "Art in Bloom" by Sonya Vartabedian:

"Karen Dardinski, The Firehouse Gallery Director, says, "Mitchell's exhibit has sprouted on The Firehouse walls." Dardinski applauds her use of shadow and color, "There's a wonderful light to her work."

Sonya writes, "Mitchell does not have to go far for her subject matter. Most of her works are inspired by the sprawling gardens at her home. The artist is an avid gardener who enjoys preparing herbal and flower essences. The flowers also come indoors, where they bloom in vases."

Red Vase is double matted with thin red liner and white silk matt.
