One early evening, we were surprised by an unexpected snow storm very late in the season. While watching from my second floor window, I was enchanted by the scene before my eyes. I watched as grand patterns of light and shadow were cast upon the landscape. Lights reflecting from my windows, along with neighboring windows and passing cars, illuminated the snow covered scene with an amazing brilliance. I was in awe of the heavy snow flakes which sparkled against the light, and was inspired to begin Night Glow of Snow. To get the feel of the heavy wet crystals I experienced, I applied globular mounds of thick acrylic paint to my canvas. In an attempt to create a deeper perspective and give the illusion of actually being in the snow storm, I made the globs continuously smaller as they melted into space. The variety of blues I used depicts the magical blue shimmer of light which I witnessed. Not being finished with this adventure, I decided to paint the watercolor Snow, Snow, Snow on the same theme. |
