My non-objective abstract paintings come from within and are very dear to me. The forms, which evolve from my studies of organic life, twist and turn in space signifying the constant change of awareness. Concentration on color, patterns, and positive/negative shapes are always the main focus in my paintings no matter what the imagery. Plasticity is the most crucial element in my abstract pieces. (Plasticity is the property of giving form or shape to matter -- in this case, paper or canvas. All elements of color, shape, line, texture, and rhythm must be poetically balanced for a successful work.) |

| The imagery unfolds slowly as my hours, which often turn into years, of intensive meditative concentration brings me into a closer union with my two-dimensional surface. For example, the painting, "Somewhere" was a five year production and a pleasant surprise to me at the end of that journey. Each piece is an attempt to pull the viewer deeper into the world of silence and reflection. Both watercolor and acrylic paintings are multi-layered to create depth. The acrylics allow me to weave tactile textures throughout the painting. I always have an abstract creation in progress on one of my easels. These pieces allow me to reach below reality. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

From the article "Spring Fling" by J.C. Lockwood, referring to Shifts: "A complex, multi-layered field of twisting and turning shapes." |

Producing Somewhere was a complete PAINTING experience for me. In the beginning, my only intention was to experiment and experience the pigments. I splashed and splattered thick, juicy paint onto the surface. For the first and only time, I actually used some black paint along with my real colors. By tipping the canvas into different positions I was able to direct the journey of the paint across the ground. Shapes and drips were manipulated to create interesting positive and negative shapes. While ruminating on with this creation for more than five years, plasticity was my foremost consideration. By using hot/cool color combinations I was able to create numerous whorling shapes dancing into space and toward the light. I was pleasantly surprised on numerous occasions by the subtle changes taking place as I co-created with my muses. |
